Our Verdict. If you delight in cushioned comfort, the Hoka Speedgoat 4 is one to consider. Don't let the "boaty" look of this shoe fool you. It's built for comfort that'll perform on the longest of runs. The underfoot cushioning is characteristically responsive, blasting you forward with each step. The outsole is aggressive, offering purchase
It’s more rounded and wider than both the Speedgoat 5 and Mafate Speed 4. I can’t argue that overall fit has become more secure and predictable in the Hoka Tecton X 2. We’ve seen a similar Matryx upper in a couple of other shoes like the Salomon S/Lab Puslar SG 2, Hoka Evo Mafate 2, The North Face Flight Vectiv, and the legendary Hoka Evo

The Hoka Mafate Speed 4 is a different shoe. Essentially it is designed for the same type of events but is much more versatile. The stack height is still 33mm (the same as the Hoka Speedgoat 5) and the drop is a low 4mm still. However, the fit has changed. The toe box is roomier and the upper is much softer. The heel and tongue are well padded
Version four is much tighter throughout and feels very comfortable on foot. It’s secure, too, perhaps more than the Speedgoat 5, thanks to the jacquard mesh upper. The Mafate Speed 4 adopts a modestly padded semi-gusseted tongue, a nicely padded ankle, and a toebox pulled from other Hoka classics.
Tread – The tread is much more “sticky” on the EVO Speedgoat than on the Challenger. In addition, the EVO Speedgoat has a 5mm lug compared to the Challenger’s 4mm lug, along with a slightly smaller drop. This, combined with the Vibram sole and a smaller lug strip down the shoe’s middle, offers more stability and traction.
Hoka EVO Speedgoat (RTR Review) Mike P (10.0): Aside from the outsole, this shoe probably feels closer to the Mafate Speed 4 than V3 does. It has a similarly softer ride, and a similarly less locked down upper. I wasn’t a big fan of the Matryx upper - the MS4 upper does feel more comfortable and easy to lock in.
10.8 oz men’s, 8.90 oz women’s; 4 mm drop; 15 colors; Available in wide and extra wide; $165; Making it a slightly heavier shoe than the Clifton, but again totally fine for those easy days. Lifespan will be same as the Clifton, though if the cushion starts to breakdown you will notice it more quickly in your form. Hoka Clifton vs Bondi
